Unusual Plates

When the state of Alabama began issuing license plates in 1912 they licensed both passenger vehicles and trucks.  However, for the first four years they used the same plates for both types of vehicles.  Beginning in 1916 and continuing until 1920, the truck plates were stamped "Commercial" to differentiate them from the regular passenger plates and from 1921 through 1927 they were stamped "Truck".  From 1928 until 1967, truck plates carried an "H" prefix along with a number which designated the weight class of the vehicle.  For a more information regarding the prefixes and weight classes used on Alabama license plates, please see the "Prefix Designations" page.
